What is Low E Glass and is it Effective for Reducing Heat and Fading?

Low E windows have been available to consumers since 1979 and are popular in colder climates because they help to reduce heat loss. Most Low E glass will reduce ultra-violet light by 40%-60%. The "E" stands for emissivity which is the measure of a surfaces ability to absorb or reflect far-infrared (non-solar) radiation. Low-E glass works by reflecting heat back to its source. It does this by utilizing an ultra thin metallic coating located inside the air space of insulated glass. Some Low E windows have argon gas inside of the insulated glass, which acts as an additional insulator. In most cases, windows being considered for window tinting get a lot of direct sunlight along with excessive heat gain. Low E does not address heat gain and direct sunlight which are major causes of fading and temperature imbalance in the home. Window film eliminates 99% of ultra violet light and absorbs and reflects the heat and sunlight (solar energy) helping to preserve furnishings and keep the home comfortable as well as allowing natural light in.
